Photographs from a city of contrasts

I first came to New York in my twenties, the way most people do — for a week at a time, camera in hand, trying to see everything before I had to leave again. Eighteen months ago I moved here, and the way I photographed the city changed with it. Some of these pictures were taken the first time I ever walked down a particular street, when everything is still strange enough to really look at. Others come from blocks I now pass most days, where I've had to work harder to keep noticing.

New York Slice is what came out of eighteen months of that — photographs taken before work, on Saturdays with nowhere to be, in the ten minutes before a train.

This is a series that shows how little New York agrees with itself — a city that keeps its contradictions out in the open, at eye level. This book is my attempt to catch a few of them before the moment passed.
